Course Title
In-Depth Reporting in Latino Communities
Department(s)
Description
This is an intensive capstone course that explores the advanced reporting, writing, organizational, analytical, and critical reasoning skills that are the foundation of in-depth journalism. Students, divided in pairs or groups, are assigned an in-depth project about an issue that affects Latino communities in the U.S. Throughout the semester, students will work their project in phases, applying the discussions and assignments the class offers on how to work with sources, the use of data, how to improve the draft and other aspects of in-depth reporting. As part of this class, students submit a detailed memo of progress. The goal: by the end of the semester each student or team will produce a 2,500-3,500 word in-depth piece that uses at least two media formats (for example, an article with photography; a video or audio piece, or a data visualization that accompanies the article). Only students fluent in Spanish are allowed to register for this course.
