This course builds on the editorial and production skills learned in the first semester Fundamentals of Multimedia Storytelling course and the reporting and writing skills of Craft I. Students strengthen their research, reporting and writing for the ear skills –and hone their recording and digital editing skills—through critical listening sessions, lectures, class discussion, in-class exercises, independent and team projects. The course emphasizes multiple edits and drafts and original reporting and enterprise stories. Over the course of the semester, students pitch and complete two feature news stories. They also work on two team newscasts recorded live-to-tape and produced on deadline.Through this course, students gain skills and experience to prepare them for work as reporters and producers in radio news and for news and current events podcasts. Students create material for a professional broadcast reel to send to prospective employers/media outlets and learn how to pitch their audio reporting to professional outlets. The class incorporates discussions on the ethics of audio news reporting, diversity and representation in audio journalism, and how podcasting is impacting the audio industry.This course fulfills the prerequisites for the following advanced, team-based audio production classes in third semester: JOUR 73452 Audio News Magazine: Audiofiles and JOUR 76009 Narrative Podcast Workshop. This course can be taken as an elective and can be taken in tandem with Audio Documentary - the courses are complementary
